Fantastic Effort by East Sutherland
At the busy and successful Scotland District 1010 Conference in the Eden Court Theatre Inverness last week, the East Sutherland Club was recognised as perhaps the most successful overall, as they received a number of awards and certificates which underline the effort and the generousity of the Club, its members and the local Sutherland population.
Firstly, the Club received the Extension Pennant as the club which had done most to encourage the formation of another club (Tain & District).
Secondly, they were recognised as one of the most successful in maintaining and indeed in increasing their own membership by 25%.
Thirdly, the Club received the Foundation Pennant as the club which had donated the second highest amount of money to International Education and Understanding.
Fourthly, the club received the Thanks for Life Certificate in recognition of their outstanding work towards the Irradication of Polio and their involvement of the community especially schools in that project.
The conference was a hugely enjoyable and educational event with superb speakers including Ester Rantzen of Childline and it was obviously a rewarding experience for the 8 members from Sutherland who attended and supported Past President Alistair Risk who substituted for President William Sutherland who was on Father of the Bride duty in Dornoch but was overwhelmed by the awards his Club had received.

Polio Eradication remains a top priority for Rotary
In 1985 Rotary International started a campaign to immunise the children of the world against polio. Rotary is a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (the largest public health initiative the world has ever known) that has spanned 200 counties, utilised 20 million volunteers, immunised over 2 billion children, probably spared 5 million from disability and averted more than a million deaths.

Our wee club is proud of its regular support of foundation and in particular, polio eradication and raised many £1,000s with fundraising efforts to help rid the world of this dreadful disease.
